How many weeks does the pregnancy last?
Getting up on pregnancy, your time begins to be calculated in trimesters and weeks. How many weeks does the pregnancy last for its normal course, and how is the duration of pregnancy and birth of the baby determined?
Determination of gestational age
First I must say that the term is set on a specific date - the date of the beginning of the last monthly. This is obstetric term. How many weeks a woman’s pregnancy lasts will be counted from that day. The real term (from conception) is specified at the first screening (first ultrasound) at 11-12 weeks. On ultrasound, the doctor determines the period based on the development of the fetus. By the way, the set period of pregnancy on the first ultrasound is considered more accurate than on the second ultrasound. All the children in the womb then grow differently, as people in general are different in their build, there are big kids, and there are small ones.
The time during which the pregnancy proceeds is:
- obstetric months - a total of 10;
- simple (usual for all) calendar months - 9 months;
- 40 weeks, how many weeks the pregnancy lasts;
- days - 280 days.
On average, any pregnancy lasts 280 days, which is 40 weeks, but do not forget, this is just an average number. Full-term baby is considered to be the interval of 266 - 294 days, or 38 - 42 weeks. It is difficult to specify the exact date due to the fact that it is difficult to accurately determine the day of ovulation, the date of fertilization of the egg by the sperm and the readiness of the child for birth. On average, generic activity begins at 38-42 weeks - the child is considered full-term and is ready for birth.
Determination of DA (Estimated Date of Delivery)
1. Method Negele:
To calculate the day when you can presumably expect such an important event, use the method of calculation according to the Negele formula. With it, the date of conception is determined. It looks like this: from the first day of the last menstruation 3 months are taken away and 7 days are added. This will be the DA.
When calculating it should be taken into account that ovulation does not necessarily occur in the middle of the cycle. If ovulation occurs between 18 and 19 days, it will indicate that the date of delivery will move in the direction of plus one more week.
2. On the first signs of movement:
- date of the first movement + 5 months = da for primiparous;
- date of the first stirring + 5.5 months = da in re-growing.
This method is extremely unreliable, since all women feel the first movements of their baby at different periods. On average, this time is 16-20 weeks. But thin, sensitive moms can feel the movement already at the 13th week. And fat women - even after the 20th week.
3. According to ultrasound: there are standards for various indicators for different periods of pregnancy.
Now we know how many weeks the pregnancy lasts. Still, according to statistics, 10% of pregnancies last more than 42 weeks, which is considered to be a post-term pregnancy. These are usually primiparous mothers whose age is higher or lower than the average child-bearing age, as well as women with 5 or more pregnancies. The reasons that generic activity did not come in due time may be heredity, one or another pathology of the health of the mother or fetus.
